How to Choose Compression Socks
How to Choose Compression Socks-Ordering the Right Size
Choosing the best size and style for compression garments requires some knowledge about your sizing and preferences. People who wear support and compression socks and/or stockings usually fall into a few "categories".
- You have been told that you need to wear them due to a medical condition
- You stand or are on your feet for many hours a day
- You sit far too much for work during the day and do not get enough exercise
- You are pregnant
Steps to Take BEFORE Placing Your Order:
It is possible to have a family member or friend take measurements first thing in the morning if you are ordering over the counter or non-medical grade garments (under 18 mmHg).
Measurements should be taken first thing in the morning, on the bare legs, in a standing or upright position using a flexible measuring tape. The tape should fit snugly (not tightly) around the leg during measuring.
For full length hosiery, for some companies, you will need to know your weight and height as well.
Both legs should be measured separately.
Watch this instructional video on how to take proper measurements.
However, when it comes to ordering and wearing medical-grade garments (20 mmHg or more), it is important for your feet and legs to be measured by a certified compression hosiery fitter so that you do not waste your time and money on choosing products that will not fit and function properly.
Follow these steps:
- Obtain the correct measurements for the types of garments you wish to order.
- Make sure you follow your doctor's prescription about the strength of garment you require (8-15 mmHg/15-20 mmHg/20-30 mmHg/30-40 mmHg).
- Think about the length of garments you require or prefer as well as the time of year or weather, sensitivities or allergies to materials, heaviness of materials and colors that you like to wear for work, home and for casual wear. We use "support" to refer to garments 15-20 mmHg or less and "compression" to refer to those with firmness 20-30 mmHg or more.
- Once you find the products you like, look for the corresponding "Size Chart" above the product name or on the upper right side of the page.
- Take your time to match your measurements with the chart and write down the size. Remember, that each company has their OWN size charts, so you cannot assume you will require the same size as you order for a different product.
- If your size falls in between 2 possibilities, consider if you have a large foot or are taller or more petite than average. Some companies suggest that if you have a larger than normal calf circumference, you may need to go with the next size up.
- Place your order!
